Sintered bronze bearings
Maintenance-free plain bearings made of sintered bronze in accordance with DIN 1850-3
Sintered bronze bearings are self-lubricating plain bearings that are particularly used at high rotational speeds and low to medium loads. Due to their oil-impregnated, porous structure, they enable maintenance-free and uniform operation over long service lives.
As a technical distributor, Nölle + Nordhorn supplies sintered bronze bearings with and without flange in accordance with DIN 1850-3 / ISO 2795 directly from stock. In addition to standard dimensions, custom-made versions and blanks can also be realised at short notice.

What are sintered bronze bearings?
Sintered bronze bearings are plain bearings made of porous sintered bronze, which are impregnated with oil during the manufacturing process. During operation, the lubricating oil is released from the pore structure to the sliding surface as required, forming a stable lubricating film between the shaft and the bearing.
This eliminates the need for external lubrication. Sintered bronze bearings are particularly suitable for applications where maintenance effort is to be reduced or lubrication points are difficult to access.
Material and manufacturing
Sintered bronze bearings consist of a proven copper-tin alloy with approximately 90% copper and 10% tin. The fine bronze powder is sintered under high pressure and elevated temperature, resulting in a controlled, open-pore structure.
Subsequently, oil impregnation is carried out in a hot bath. The oil is permanently retained within the pore structure and ensures good sliding properties, smooth running and low wear during operation.
When are sintered bronze bearings the right choice?
- high rotational speeds occur
- low to medium radial loads are present
- maintenance-free operation is required
- compact installation spaces must be used
- low-noise running is desired
Typical applications include uniform movements with constant loads in machinery and plant engineering.
Technical properties of sintered bronze bearings
Typical guideline values (depending on design and installation situation):
- Surface pressure: up to approx. 20 N/mm²
- Sliding speed: up to approx. 6 m/s
- Coefficient of friction: approx. 0.08–0.12
- Temperature range: approx. −20 °C to +100 °C
- Low-noise running
- Good corrosion resistance to water and many neutral media
Limitations of sintered bronze bearings
Sintered bronze bearings are not the optimum solution for every application. Limitations apply in particular in cases of very high shock loads, extreme temperatures outside the recommended operating range, or heavily contaminated environments without adequate sealing.
In such cases, solid bronze bearings or polymer plain bearings may represent the technically more suitable alternative.
