The minimum quantity lubrication system lubricates the cutting surface between the tool and the workpiece with minute quantities. Lubrication is realised with an aerosol comprising small drops of oil that are embedded in an air current that is sprayed on. There are two methods of minimum quantity lubrication - internal and external lubrication.

In the internal lubrication system, the aerosol is fed directly through the boreholes in the tool and applied directly to the friction surface between the milling cutter and the workpiece.
The external lubrication unit works with nozzles, and the aerosol is sprayed from the outside onto the point that needs to be lubricated.
Typical applications are tool machines for e.g. milling, rolling, cutting and drilling.
